Best JDM License Plates Currently Available in New York
We checked thousands of JDM license plates across multiple states. Most of the good stuff is taken, but here are some hidden gems actually available to snag.
All plates verified available at the New York DMV — October 2026
We ran thousands of JDM-themed plate ideas through the New York DMV using PlateHog's real-time checker. Most came back taken. The survivors here are a similar depth to Florida, but with completely different winners — including several New York exclusives that aren't available anywhere else.
New York's JDM scene is concentrated but serious. The Tri-State area has some of the country's most active enthusiast communities — the Long Island Car Shows, the Queens JDM meets, the Wantagh regulars. The cold winters keep builds in garages and out of the salt, which means the people who are serious about it are really serious.
Two New York-exclusive finds in this dataset: ATTESA (full acronym, unmodified — taken everywhere except NY) and GTRGRL (taken everywhere except NY). Both are sitting right there. Both will be gone eventually.
New York calls these “Personalized Plates.” The fee is $60 initial plus $31.25 annual renewal. Up to 8 characters — the most generous limit of any state in our dataset. Letters, numbers, and spaces allowed.
Available JDM Plates in New York
New York has a serious GT-R scene — Long Island Cars and Coffee, the Wantagh meetups, the Tri-State GT-R registry. GTRCLUB sitting unclaimed at the NY DMV is the kind of thing that shouldn't be true in 2026. Eight characters is the New York limit, and GTRCLUB sits at seven. It's the plate that earns a head nod from every R32 through R35 owner at every meet from Flushing to Farmingdale. Someone is going to grab this. It probably won't be long.
ATTESA — Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-terrain — is taken in every state we checked. Except New York. It's the full acronym, unmodified, sitting right there at the NY DMV. This is the AWD system that made the Skyline GT-R the car to beat in touring car racing for a decade. Every R32, R33, and R34 GT-R runs ATTESA. On a New York plate, ATTESA reads as both a technical badge of honor and a perfect 6-character plate. New York only across all four states.
New York and New York only in our entire dataset. GTRGRL — available nowhere else across CA, FL, or TN. The female GT-R community is real, active, and underrepresented on plates. This is the plate. Six characters, immediately readable, and it will spark a conversation at every single Cars and Coffee from here to Montauk. If you're a woman in the GT-R world and you've been waiting for a plate that fits — this is it, and it's sitting at the NY DMV right now.
The Wangan — the straight highway sections around Tokyo Bay where midnight racing culture was born in the late '80s. The Shuto Expressway. The scenes that inspired Wangan Midnight, the manga and anime series that got an entire generation to care about the C30 Z432R and the RX7 FD. WANGN in five letters. Available in New York only across all four states we checked. The appropriate state for it might actually be New York — the BQE at 2am has its own energy.
STREET with the Es swapped to 3s — two substitutions, the kind of thing the DMV filter doesn't catch and every enthusiast reads instantly. STR33T is the tribute to the cars built for public roads that somehow walk track cars at the exit. The street GT-Rs, the street Supras, the street builds that only reveal what they are when the light goes green. Available in New York and Tennessee. The substitution is clean enough that you'll get both audiences: the people who get it immediately and the people who do a double-take.
The R35 GT-R's nickname is Godzilla, and ZILLA35 is available in all four states we checked — but the New York plate design looks particularly clean with it. New York's JDM scene is heavy on R35s; they're practical enough for Tri-State winters and fast enough for summer track days at NJMP. ZILLA35 is the plate that doesn't need context. Everyone at every Dunkin' parking lot meet on Long Island knows exactly what it means.
The VR38DETT — the hand-assembled, dry-sump, twin-turbo 3.8L V6 that Nissan built specifically for the R35. Each engine is signed by the technician who assembled it. The production version makes 565hp. The Nismo version makes 600hp. VR38TT strips it to the essentials — engine family, displacement, turbos. Available in Florida, New York, and Tennessee. A New York plate on an R35 with this text on the back is exactly what it should be.
