Best JDM License Plates Currently Available in California
We checked thousands of JDM license plates across multiple states. Most of the good stuff is taken, but here are some hidden gems actually available to snag.
All plates verified available at the California DMV — October 2026
We ran thousands of JDM-themed plate ideas through the California DMV using PlateHog's real-time checker — every GT-R nickname, every engine code, every piece of Japanese car culture slang we could think of. Most came back taken. These survived.
California is simultaneously the best and worst state for JDM plates. Best because the car scene is enormous — Japan Cup, JCCS, the SoCal GT-R community, the NorCal Skyline meetups. Worst because that same community has been picking off the obvious plates for twenty years. GTR? Gone. NISMO? Gone. SUPRA? Gone in the mid-2000s and it's never coming back.
What's left is better. The plates below are the ones that survived because they require knowledge to appreciate. Engine codes. Obscure acronyms. Phonetic transliterations. These aren't plates for people who want a reaction from everyone — they're for people who want a reaction from the right people.
Quick note on terminology: California calls these “Environmental License Plates” (ELP). The rest of the country calls them vanity plates, custom plates, or personalized plates. Same thing. The CA DMV charges a $53 initial fee plus an $18 annual renewal. 2–7 characters, letters and numbers only.

This is the one that surprises everyone. GTRCLUB — six letters, zero ambiguity, still sitting unclaimed at the California DMV. Anyone who's spent time at Japan Cup or Big San knows exactly what this plate means. The R35 community is massive in California; there are more GT-Rs registered in SoCal than in most entire states. And nobody has grabbed this. It's the kind of plate that earns a head nod from every Nissan owner at every Cars and Coffee from San Diego to Sacramento.
Seven characters, available in California. GTRLYFE is what you put on the daily when the GT-R is in the garage on Sundays. It's the plate for someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes the R35 ecosystem — the track days, the builds, the dyno sheets, the forums. California's car culture is the deepest in the country, and GTRLYFE being open here in 2026 is genuinely shocking. If this is still up when you're reading this, you're either first or very lucky.
The R35 GT-R's nickname is Godzilla. Has been since the R32 took the Nürburgring by storm in 1989 and Australian journalists couldn't figure out how a Japanese family car company built something that fast. ZILLA35 is clean, readable, and instantly decoded by anyone who matters. It also works on an R35 without being so on-the-nose that non-enthusiasts will ever question it. Available in California. That's not something you see every day.
The RB26DETT is the engine that made the Skyline GT-R legendary — twin turbocharged 2.6L inline-six with individual throttle bodies, a claimed 276hp that everyone knew was conservative by about 100, and a reputation for bulletproof reliability at double the stock power. DETT on a California plate is taken. But RB26TT is sitting right there. Six characters, technically accurate, and one of those plates where every second person who reads it at a light is going to glance over to see what you're driving.
High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering — the rear-wheel steering system Nissan ran on R32 and R33 Skylines. Most owners deleted it the moment they built the car past stock power because it was a liability at the limit. The ones who kept it love having this argument. HICAS is a deep cut. The kind of plate that only about 500 people in California will immediately recognize, and all 500 of them will respect it. Available right now. This is a low-key flex that hits harder than anything obvious.
ATTESA — Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-terrain — the AWD system that made the Skyline GT-R the hardest car to beat on wet pavement in the late '80s and early '90s. ATTESA (straight) is taken. ATT3SA with a 3 for the E is available. It's subtle enough that most people won't read the substitution at highway speed, which means it's perfect — the kind of plate that rewards attention. California has a massive Skyline scene. Somebody needs this.
If you've ever watched Initial D with subtitles, you know that Japanese motorsport culture has a word for sliding a car sideways through mountain passes at speed that sounds better in the original language. DRIFUTO is the phonetic transliteration of drift through Japanese. It's not reckless — it's cultured. Available in California, where the canyon roads that inspired the whole genre exist in real life. This plate on an AE86, FC3S, or S13 would be perfect.

How we checked
PlateHog queries the California DMV directly via the same session-based API the DMV's own website uses. Every result above is a live availability check, not cached data or a guess. We built a list covering GT-R generations (R32, R33, R34, R35), engine codes (RB26, VR38, 2JZ, RX7, FD3S), JDM culture terms, Japanese city names, samurai/anime references, and drift culture vocabulary. Then we ran every one of them through all four supported states simultaneously.
California had fewer survivors than Florida, New York, or Tennessee — the West Coast JDM community has had decades to pick the plate database clean. If your first choice is taken here, it might still be open in another state — we have blogs for all four.
