Question 4

After your plate text is approved, expect 4-6 weeks for production and delivery. Some states offer expedited processing for an additional fee.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

Question 6

How do I order a vanity plate in West Virginia?

Accepted Answer

First, check availability using PlateHog to make sure your desired text is open. Then visit the West Virginia DMV website to submit your application and pay the $15 fee. Your plate will be mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.

Question 7

Why does West Virginia ban numbers 1 through 2000?

Accepted Answer

West Virginia reserves standalone numeric plates from 1 to 2000 for state government, dignitaries, and historical use — a tradition dating back to the early days of automobile registration. You cannot apply for '7' or '1976' as a vanity plate. You CAN apply for an alphanumeric combination that includes those numbers (like 'WV1976' or 'CARS7'), as long as the plate isn't purely numeric below the 2000 threshold.

Question 8

What's the difference between West Virginia's standard and scenic vanity plates?

Accepted Answer

West Virginia issues vanity plates on either the standard 'Wild, Wonderful' base (red mountains, blue sky) or the scenic specialty bases (New River Gorge, Coal Heritage, Mountain Heritage). Cost is the same $15 annual fee for both, but specialty bases require an additional $20 application surcharge. The 'Wild, Wonderful' standard plate is the most common choice and accepts up to 8 characters.

Question 9

How strict is West Virginia about vanity plate content?

Accepted Answer

West Virginia's DMV review is moderate by national standards — stricter than Tennessee but more lenient than California or New York. The state denies obvious profanity, drug references, and government impersonation, but historically allows wordplay and innuendo that other states reject. The 8-character limit also enables creative combinations that wouldn't fit elsewhere.
