Yes. Ohio allows plate retention through OPLATES — you can hold a personalized plate for up to one year between vehicles by paying a small retention fee. If you transfer the plate to a new vehicle within Ohio, there's no extra fee beyond the standard plate transfer.

Question 9

Are there any restrictions on Ohio plates that other states don't have?

Accepted Answer

Ohio's rules are relatively standard, but the BMV pays particular attention to plates that could be confused with police, government, or commercial-vehicle plates. Combinations like 'POLICE', 'OHIODR', and certain 3-letter government-prefix patterns are denied even when they're not offensive. Ohio also bans common drug slang in any language — including Latin, German, and Spanish abbreviations.
