No, the vanity plate "APEX2" is currently taken in New York. You can add it to your PlateHog watchlist to get notified if it becomes available. Plates sometimes open up when owners let registrations lapse or transfer to a new vehicle.

Question 2

How much does a vanity plate cost in New York?

A personalized plate in New York costs $60 initially plus $31.25 per year for renewal. Available on the Excelsior base design.

Question 3

Can I check vanity plate availability in New York online?

Question 4

How long does it take to get a vanity plate in New York?

Accepted Answer

After your plate text is approved, expect 4-6 weeks for production and delivery. Some states offer expedited processing for an additional fee.

Question 5

What characters are allowed on New York vanity plates?

Accepted Answer

New York vanity plates allow 2 to 8 characters using letters and numbers only. No spaces or special characters are permitted. New York allows one extra character compared to most states.

Question 6

How do I order a vanity plate in New York?

Accepted Answer

First, check availability using PlateHog to make sure your desired text is open. Then visit the New York DMV website to submit your application and pay the $60 fee. Your plate will be mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.

Question 7

Why does New York allow 8 characters when most states only allow 7?

Accepted Answer

New York's Excelsior plate base (introduced in 2020 to replace the gold-on-blue design) was redesigned with slightly tighter character spacing, allowing the DMV to fit one extra character without sacrificing readability. The 8-character limit is unique to New York among PlateHog-supported states. It opens up combinations like 'BUSDRVR8' or 'NYC10024' that wouldn't fit on a 7-character plate.

Question 8

How does the New York DMV decide which vanity plates to reject?

Accepted Answer

New York runs a two-stage review: an automated screening system that flags profanity, slurs, drug references, and politically inflammatory text, followed by human review of borderline cases. The DMV publishes general guidelines (no offensive content, no references to violence or illegal activity, no impersonation of government plates) but does not publish a public banned-word list. Rejected applicants get a fee refund and can reapply with a different combination.

Question 9

Can I use my New York vanity plate on a motorcycle or commercial vehicle?

Accepted Answer

New York issues separate personalized plate types for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles. The character limit drops to 6 for motorcycle plates due to plate size, and commercial vanity plates have additional restrictions (no implied state-of-origin claims, no references to specific freight types). The base $60 fee applies across all vehicle types.
